I actually thought that the robot's inexpressive face and his cloak added a layer of anxious tension on top of everything -- as in, is this army-bot going to take of the cloak and just rip this human to shreds? How can this guy be so mean when the robot is hiding some serious weaponry? So in addition to everything else, I was terrified, until North No. 2's actions completely won me over. Brilliant stuff.Sandyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09672666055136757425noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8882610517765002247.post-11377757981707881392009-02-14T05:15:00.000-06:002009-02-14T05:15:00.000-06:00This comic... And there's a part of me that resents these Grimdark remakes. Astro is fun, do we need to have these "Adult" joyless versions of kid's comics?

On the other hand, I found Urasawa's Monster to be a good crime thriller. In fact I'd recommend reading Monster before reading Pluto.

But I'd also recommend reading Astro Boy before reading Pluto. Urasawa's take on Tezuka's world works best if you know Tezuka's characters.

This comic comes off as a sort of fan fiction. It's Urasawa's love letter to Tezuka. Not that that's a bad thing.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01621988278894362595noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8882610517765002247.post-7765064486593927052009-02-10T23:03:00.000-06:002009-02-10T23:03:00.000-06:00Thanks, Scott. I have read a little Astro Boy, and I've seen several episodes of the cartoon, but I think Urasawa does such a good job of establishing the world, you don't really need to know anything else.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13867868039166531163noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8882610517765002247.post-46383516128973410912009-02-10T22:45:00.000-06:002009-02-10T22:45:00.000-06:00The composer's story is original for Pluto. He's in the manga for all of two pages, and really just implores North #2 to hold up the pride of Scotland. Other element's such as Brando's family are also Urasawa inventions.

Astro Boy isn't necessary, but it does enhance a reading of Pluto. You can get the book incredible cheap on Amazon, someone's selling for a $0.01Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8882610517765002247.post-78139885690026240932009-02-10T20:31:00.000-06:002009-02-10T20:31:00.000-06:00Would you recommend reading Astro Boy before readi...Would you recommend reading Astro Boy before reading this?Sandyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09672666055136757425noreply@blogger.com
