But I don't know if I would call it self-conscious; there is a bit of that element, with characters recognizing that their situations are crazy, but I think it takes itself completely seriously, with these amazing cosmic threats being felt by the characters, and the huge-scale battles being viewed with an appropriate level of awe. Even early on, when Adam learned the origin of the universe, he burst into tears, unable to comprehend the concept and shaken by the experience. I dunno, maybe Casey's occasional pop culture references and goofy slang seem like an attempt to seem cool and aloof, but I see it as more of a version of Kirby's verbal tics like the rampant quotation marks, but done in Casey's own style, rather than just emulating the original. Whatever the case, it totally works for me, and even Scioli's art is a unique enough thing that it's not just a Kirby pastiche, but his own version of that chunky aesthetic, with the details cranked up to 11. I dig it, man, but it's cool if you don't.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13867868039166531163noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8882610517765002247.post-46432522176251172522010-08-31T18:58:26.116-05:002010-08-31T18:58:26.116-05:00Oh yeah. I'd picked up the single issues in the fifty cent bins, but some how this just totally came together in collected format - I do hope that JH causes some other mainstream artists to step their game up.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8882610517765002247.post-52661181388886773392010-08-31T18:55:57.835-05:002010-08-31T18:55:57.835-05:00So if I strongly disliked the first three volumes ...So if I strongly disliked the first three volumes of Godland - You can't SELF CONSCIOUSLY do Kirby, it just doesn't work - would I like the last few?MarkAndrewhttp://goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/noreply@blogger.com
