"Classical Love" is the idea that pure love can only be achieved between two men; this is because men are equal on an intellectual level and relate to eachother more so. While women are considered to be lustful creatures, used for procreation. Many Ancient socities were involved in some form of "Classical Love", the most famous being the Greeks. That is why we see Yuki and Garai in Greek style, (it looks like they could be on the side of a vase) There is also another moment in the manga that supports this theory. I am talking about when Yuki takes Garai to a Gay sex club; all the men are wearing togas. This is my take for the presense of those panels.

LOL I am writing about MW for my final paper for my English Anime Lit. Class, my focus is around this concept.Chelsey Yorknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8882610517765002247.post-64040488077563511442008-04-06T00:13:00.000-05:002008-04-06T00:13:00.000-05:00Wow, I never made the Salome connection, but it ma...Wow, I never made the Salome connection, but it makes sense. That's an interesting point, and it's another entry in the list of Tezuka's talents. Thanks for clearing that up for me.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13867868039166531163noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8882610517765002247.post-35618881531982570482008-04-05T17:50:00.000-05:002008-04-05T17:50:00.000-05:00Actually the panels which you referred to as Tezuk...Actually the panels which you referred to as Tezuka trying out a "classical art" mode is a direct visual reference to the art nouveau illustrations that Aubrey Beardsley did for Oscar Wilde's dramatic retelling of "Salome". Salome was the daughter of Herod, who upon being asked by her father as to what she would like after she had danced for him on his birthday, demanded the head of St John the Baptist. In a very obvious way, I think Tezuka wanted to draw parallels between the personalities of Yuki and Salome - they seem to enjoy the thrill of wielding the power to kill, as well as paying homage to Beardsley and Wilde. I enjoyed reading MW because of how perverse it was, something I thought uncharacteristic of Tezuka. Admittedly, it's not as profound as some of his other works but it's still a good read.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8882610517765002247.post-7257476775872335282008-01-02T22:11:00.000-06:002008-01-02T22:11:00.000-06:00Yuki is actually the character's last name; his fi...Yuki is actually the character's last name; his first name is Michio. I hope you do try Tezuka out, although I would recommend Buddha, Phoenix, or Ode to Kirihito as better places to start. This one is enjoyable deranged though.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13867868039166531163noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8882610517765002247.post-74450057126291396762008-01-02T16:47:00.000-06:002008-01-02T16:47:00.000-06:00For some reason, I have yet to get into Osamu Tezu...For some reason, I have yet to get into Osamu Tezuka. This little preview has picqued my interest more than a little and from what you're showing here your title might just be right on the money!

These disconnected images remind me of some of Dan Clowes' more bizarre "stories," actually.

Weirdly, the only Yuki's I've met have all been female. And I've met a lot of Yuki's. Then again, I've met a woman named Jun and that's usually a male name. So I dunno! It's his country- he knows more about it than I do that's for sure!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17723952510039418615noreply@blogger.com
