I don't know, I might be able to get off cheap this week...
New comics this week (Wednesday, 7/18/07):
ARMY @ LOVE #5 (MR) 2.99
This series is awesome, but I'm wondering if I should start waiting for the trade. I want it to get good sales though, so maybe I should wait until 12 issues in or so before I switch. Whatever the case, I'm sure I'll dig it. Rick Veitch rules.
AVENGERS CLASSIC #2 2.99
I didn't buy the first issue of this, but I was tempted, due to my love of early Stan Lee/Jack Kirby stuff (Hulk in clown makeup juggling elephants!). I dunno, it seems like a bit much for a reprint with one of those "stuff that happened between the panels" stories tacked on. I'll probably continue to skip it.
BLACK CHERRY GN (MR) 17.99
Ooh, it's that Doug TenNapel book that got me in trouble a while back. I don't know if I'll pick it up right away, but I'll probably try to read it sometime.
COVER GIRL #3 (OF 5) 3.99
More Kevin Church Hollywood hijinx. This might or might not fall under my "wait for the trade" policy, but I'll finish buying the miniseries. Gotta support the fellow bloggers.
FLIGHT VOL 4 GN 24.95
Wow, I can't believe I still haven't read a single volume of this series. One day I will rectify that mistake.
FULL COLOR GN 15.99
This is a weird book from Image about violence in New York or something. It looked interesting, but I don't know if I want to drop 16 bucks on it. I'll read some reviews and see if it's worth buying.
GHOST RIDER TRAIL OF TEARS #6 (OF 6) 2.99
The final issue of the Garth Ennis supernatural western thingy. I expect this will go on my "sell on Ebay" pile as soon as I finish reading it. It hasn't been terrible or anything, but it's just not something I feel I need to keep. But I guess I have to keep buying it out of a sense of completion or something. Huh, I need to rethink these sorts of things. I guess this is a good example of why I've been trying to switch to trades...
GIANT SIZED MARVEL ADVENTURES AVENGERS #1 3.99
I dropped this series last week, but I might have to pick up this issue, in which the Avengers team up with the Agents of Atlas. Damn you, Parker!
GODLAND #19 2.99
Hey, more cosmic craziness! This is another series I'm considering switching to trades on, but I dunno, it's pretty enjoyable reading each issue... I'll probably keep buying it monthly.
GODLAND VOL 3 PROTO PLASTIC PARTY TP 14.99
But if you are waiting for the trade, here's your chance to catch up. These are really some awesome comics, so I encourage everybody to check them out.
GOON #19 2.99
And hey, here's another issue of Eric Powell's salute to punching freaks! I love this book, but it seems to come out so irregularly, maybe I should switch to trades on it as well. But I like the letter columns and stuff, so I don't know what I'll do.
INTERSECTIONS SC GN 14.99
This seemed like an interesting book; it's a collection of a series of art postcards (I think) that Sean Phillips and Duncan Fegredo sent back and forth to each other. I don't think I'll drop 15 bucks for it though.
MADMAN GARGANTUA HC 125.00
This thing is pretty awesome, if quite expensive. I have all the issues, so I don't need to get it, but if you want to spend a lot of money and have a huge book on your shelf, you can't go wrong with this. And I'm sure there will be some sweet bonus art and things like that. But still, wow, expensive.
MELTDOWN TP 15.99
This was a two-issue series from Image, I believe (although they were prestige-format issues and thus lengthier than regular issues). Was it any good? Probably not worth me picking it up, but somebody please inform me if I'm wrong about that.
MONSTER ATTACK NETWORK GN 12.95
Hey, this sounds interesting: it's about a Damage Control-like company that cleans up a Tokyo stand-in after attacks from giant monsters. 104 pages, by Marc Bernardin, from AiT/PlanetLar. Worth a look, at least.
PROGRAMME #1 (OF 12) 2.99
This new Wildstorm series from Peter Milligan is probably another one that I should wait for the trade on, but I've already pre-ordered it. I hope it's good.
REPO #2 (OF 5) 3.50
We'll see with this issue if the miniseries is worth finishing. I'm hoping for some crazy futuristic action. Also coming soon: a review of another Rick Spears book.
SHAZAM THE MONSTER SOCIETY OF EVIL #4 (OF 4) 5.99
The final issue of the awesome Jeff Smith series, and probably the best book of the week. This series is great, although I should probably have waited for the trade. Next time, I guess.
SHOJO BEAT AUG 07 VOL 3 #8 (C: 1-0-0) 5.99
Yeah, I already got this in the mail. I'm reading it right now, so expect a review soon.
SPACE PINCHY TP (MR) 15.95
This is that weird-ass-looking manga-style Dark Horse book featuring a pneumatic heroine in space or something. I doubt I'll read it (unless it gets some good reviews), but it's worth pointing out just because it's so goofily strange.
SPIRIT #8 2.99
Darwyn Cooke's back! I don't remember what this one is supposed to be about, but I think it involves Silk Satin. Why not, she's cool.
SUPER VILLAIN TEAM UP MODOKS 11 #1 (OF 5) 2.99
Oh boy, this looks crazy. It interests me because hey, M.O.D.O.K., but I don't know if I should get it or wait for a trade. Hmmmmm. I'll decide in the store, I guess.
TEXAS STRANGERS #2 2.99
Wow, it certainly took a while for the second issue of this kids' supernatural western series to show up. I'll probably get it, but who knows if it will keep coming out or not. The first issue was all right, but unless it gets better I probably won't bother to continue buying it.
THE ORDER #1 2.99
This is another one I'm highly conflicted on. On the plus side, it's written by Matt Fraction and will probably be fun. On the minus side, it's a Marvel superhero book spinning out of the whole Civil War mess. I'll probably wait until a trade comes out, if I get it at all.
WALK-IN VOL 1 TP (MR) 14.99
This Virgin series got some decent reviews, but I picked up the first issue out of curiosity (mostly due to the presence of writer Jeff Parker) and wasn't too impressed. Anybody want to let me know if it got any better, and if I should pick it up?
WARREN ELLIS BLACK GAS 2 #3 (OF 3) (MR) 3.99
This series took its sweet time coming out. I don't know if it'll be worth it, but I've come this far, so I'll see it through to the end. It hasn't been bad, but the second miniseries seems to lack the verve of the first one, and it wasn't helped by the incredibly slow release schedule.
-----
Whew! That was longer than I expected. Maybe I won't save too much money after all. Anyway, expect more reviews either tonight or tomorrow. Hasta!
Hey this is probably one of my favorite comic blogs thank you.
ReplyDeleteAbout the Meltdown TP. I highly recommend it. The two $6 comics were definitely my favorite comic of the respective weeks. It was a very well done super-hero comic that actually had a serious story.
Hey, thanks for the recommendation (and the praise!). David Schwartz, the writer, also sent me an email recommending it (he is a bit biased though). I think I'm going to have to get it now. So much for this being a cheap week...
ReplyDeleteHey, Matt, lots of stuff on the non-mainstream front this week, huh?
ReplyDeleteI had to fight really hard the urge to pre-order the Madman Gargantua collection - It must be absolutely beautiful, but...well, too expensive for me right now.
And I'm proud to have managed not to buy Jeff Smith's Shazam series (ok, there goes "non-mainstream" right outta the window), because the hard cover for this one will kick serious ass!
Best,
J.
James: I know, weeks like this are great for me as I get less and less interested in Marvel/DC superheroics. And hey, Jeff Smith has enough non-mainstream cred to be a worthy purchase! ;-) And you can always argue as to what is "mainstream" or not. Like, what about Godland? Or Army@Love? Whatever; I just like good comics.
