For these solicits, DC gets my valentine, not Marvel

New solicitations for May came out this week. Off we go:

Marvel:

Thunderbolts #114 - We'll see if I'm still reading this by the time this issue comes out (didn't I say that about last month's solicits?). Pretty good cover though, even if I'm not sure what's going on. Is Green Goblin attacking Bullseye? Are they both being exploded? Are they doing a Fastball Special? I dunno, but it looks exciting!

Ultimate Fantastic Four #42 - I've thought about buying this series, since I generally like what's been done with it, and I really dig Pasqual Ferry's art. Maybe I'll start with this issue, the beginning of a new storyline with Silver Surfer.

Ultimate Galactus HC - I read this series, but didn't buy it. It's pretty good, with some of Ellis's best Marvel work, in my opinion. I'll consider buying this, maybe.

X-Men: First Class Special - I haven't been reading the First Class miniseries, because although I like Jeff Parker (hi, Jeff!), I'm not really interested in stories of this nature (you know, like X-Men: The Hidden Years), and I don't care for Roger Cruz's art. However, this special contains art by Kevin Nowlan, Mike Allred, and Nick Dragotta, so I'm on board!

Sensational Spider-Man Annual #1 - I'll definitely check this one out; it's written by Matt Fraction, with art by Salvador Larroca. Stories about Mary Jane; I guess she's not dead yet! And it contains what the solicitation calls "Romita-esque flashback sequences". Should be interesting.

Silver Surfer Omnibus volume 1 HC - I've been wanting to pick up the Essential version of this, but the color version might be the way to go if I want to splurge. Classic Stan Lee stories, with art by John Buscema and Jack Kirby!

Spider-Man/Fantastic Four #2 - That's a pretty generic cover (I get it, Spidey joins the FF), but I'm still kind of excited about this series.

Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane #18 - I dunno what happens in this issue (I avoid reading solicitations for series that I know I want to buy), but that's an interesting cover. At first I thought it was showing that Mary Jane will become Firestar (which I wouldn't like), but then I realized that's Harry, not Peter, walking next to her. So maybe it's saying she'll get back together with Harry, and Spidey will date Firestar. Or maybe they'll all just be friends. Or maybe I'm turning into a teenage girl.

Spider-Man Newspaper Strips volume 1 HC - This is a pretty cool idea. I knew Stan Lee wrote the old strips, but I didn't know John Romita drew them. This collects strips from 1977-1980. Neat!

Iron Man: Hypervelocity #5 (of 6) - This is a great cover. The weird punk girl that's been haunting the Iron Man suit takes the form of all the Avengers. With some funny gags, like writing "France" in graffiti across Captain America's mask, or changing the text on Thor's hammer. This series is awesome.

Immortal Iron Fist #6 - Another issue of the cool series. I can't wait to read more. That's all I have to say.

Marvel Illustrated: Last of the Mohicans #1 - This is an interesting project; I'll consider picking it up.

Punisher War Journal #7 - I'm thinking I'll just pass on this series. I thought I might try to get into it after the Civil War tie-in, but it's looking less and less appealing to me. Change my mind, Punisher fans! Why should I get it?

Runaways #26 - Whedon's second issue, and he's already got the team meeting the Punisher! That should be fun. Nice cover, especially Molly's expression.

Blade #6 - I'm not interested in Blade, but that's a great cover. This Djurdjevic fellow is pretty good.

Criminal #6 - A new storyline. I didn't realize this comic was going to feature unconnected crime stories in each storyline. Unless I'm wrong, and they end up being connected.

Criminal: Coward TPB - This was a good storyline. Well, the first four issues were, at least. I'm pretty confident that Brubaker will deliver in the final issue. Check it out, if you haven't already.

The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born #4 (of 7) - The first issue of this was pretty good; I never got around to writing a review, but I liked it well enough. Especially Jae Lee's art, which is on display on this cover. Check out all the baroque folds in that guy's robe. I'll probably end up getting this whole series.

Ghost Rider: Trail of Tears #4 (of 6) - I'm slightly interested in this, although not enough to pick up the first issue when it came out recently. I don't really care about Ghost Rider, but an Old West version of him might be interesting, if Ennis isn't just phoning it in. Did anybody read the first issue? Is it any good? Help me out here!

Solicited without a cover image:

Newuniversal #6 - I'm enjoying the series, but since I'm avoiding the solicit text, I don't have much to say in the absence of a cover.

Astonishing X-Men #21 - Man, I just got done saying that I liked how issues of this series seemed to be coming out more rapidly, and they go and have a three-month gap (from tomorrow until May) until the next issue. Damn.
-----

And that's it for Marvel. They don't have too much that I'm actually excited about, much less interested in. On the other hand, we have:

DC:

Batman #666 - Oh, man, I love this. Grant Morrison is awesome. Issue #666 has an alternate future where Batman's son Damien, as the new Batman, fights the devil. I guess. Should be fun!

Batman: Ego and Other Tails HC - A collection of Darwyn Cooke's Batman stories, including his "Ego" arc from Legends of the Dark Knight and his Catwoman: Selina's Big Score. Sweet. I haven't read any of that stuff. I might wait until this is released as a paperback to save some dough, but I'll probably end up getting it.

Batman: Turning Points TPB - I guess this was a miniseries or something. I don't know. I'm pretty much only interested due to the presence of Paul Pope as an artist. Also, nice cover by Tim Sale.

Catwoman: When in Rome TPB - Speaking of Tim Sale, that is one sexy cover. Mee-yow! Sorry. I probably won't get this, due to the presence of Jeph Loeb. It is cheap though, at $12.99.

JLA Classified #38 - Part 2 of Peter Milligan's "Kid Amazo" storyline. I'll decide if I want to buy it after I read reviews of part 1.

The Spirit #6 - I love that cover. Apparently the Spirit has a fight in the mosh pit at a punk show. Fun! Tons of great details in there, like the girls' ripped stockings and the dancing figures in the background. Go Cooke!

Re-Gifters - Another entry in the Minx line. I'll get this one due to the creative team of Mike Carey, Sonny Liew, and Marc Hempel, who did the cool Vertigo miniseries My Faith in Frankie.

Midnighter #7 - This one is the fill-in issue by Brian K. Vaughan and Darick Robertson. I don't know anything else about it, although he might be fighting Hydra, judging from the cover.

Ex Machina #28 - Part 3 of the "Power Down" storyline. I'm stoked to read the rest of it. Weird logo on the cover; I wonder if they'll change that.

Silverfish HC - I'm not sold on David Lapham; other than his short Matrix comic, I've never read anything that's grabbed me. But this seems interesting; it might be worth a consideration.

100 Bullets #84 - Kick-ass cover. Since I won't read it until I get the collection, I have nothing else to say.

Army@Love #3 - Man, I can't wait to read this series. I don't think the first issue comes out until next month. Freaky, subversive Rick Veitch shit. Should be cool.

Crossing Midnight #7 - Another freaky cover by J.H. Williams III. We'll see if I'm still reading the comic by then.

DMZ #19 - That is an awesome cover. I love this book. That's all.

Fables #61 - Another sweet James Jean cover. You've got Bufkin the flying monkey, and an apparent reference to the Hanged Knight, who I don't think we've seen since "Animal Farm". Cool. I'll be reading this when it's collected.

Fables: Sons of Empire TPB - Ooh, I can't wait to read this one. It's got the Mike Allred issues. And again, beautiful James Jean cover. I love the stylized Christmas ornaments.

Jack of Fables #11 - Ah, the conclusion of the "Jack Frost" story! And the cover (which, at the risk of sounding monotonous, is another beautiful effort from James Jean) links up with issue #6 (in fact, the picture here has #7 on it). I love the way in the last issue Jack (in captions) interrupted the story, saying he'd get back to it later, and anyway, they would fix it in the trade. That's funny.

Hellblazer #232 - I'm not really a fan of Hellblazer, but Andy Diggle is the writer on this issue (and the previous one), so I'm tempted to pick it up. I'll see if I can resist come April.

Testament #18 - From the cover, it looks like they're doing Jacob's Ladder. Art by Dean Ormston this issue. Where do I know him from? Oh well, I dig this book, blah blah blah, you know the drill.

The issue of Y: The Last Man that's solicited this month is the same one as last month, so I guess it's late. Come on, don't make me wait to get to the conclusion! I love this book.
-----

And I guess that's it for DC, also. Like I said, I'm much more interested in their offerings, although I'm mostly interested in Vertigo and Wildstorm. I expect Image's solicits will be out sometime this week, so I'll look at them then. Bye!
-----

By the way, Dark Horse also released their solicitations for May, but I didn't really see anything interesting on there, so I didn't mention them. Just in case anyone was wondering.

A big week, with an especially significant highlight

Wow, there's lots of stuff this week. Check it:

Oh, wait, first I wanted to share the news that a new writer has finally been announced for Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane: Terry Moore, of Strangers in Paradise fame. I don't think I've ever read any of his stuff, but it's supposed to be good. Apparently, they're starting the series over with a new #1 and probably a different title. No artist has been announced, so I don't know if David Hahn will continue. I might give it an issue or two, or just decide to stop reading after #20, Sean McKeever's last issue. We'll see.

Okay, on with the show:

New comics this week (Wednesday, 6/20/07):

ARMY @ LOVE #4 (MR) 2.99

More Rick Veitch craziness! By the way, I still haven't got the copy of Shiny Beasts that I ordered. Maybe that will come in this week so I can spend even more money.

BANYA EXPLOSIVE DELIVERY MAN VOL 4 TP 12.95

I've never read this manwha (is that how it's spelled?) series, but it sounds crazy enough that it might be fun.

CROMARTIE HIGH SCHOOL VOL 11 10.95

Good god, I'm behind on this series. Someday I will catch up. Someday.

DEATH NOTE VOL 12 TP 7.99

And here's the big one for the week. The finale of one of my favorite manga series. I hope it's awesome, and not anticlimactic or anything. No Journey, please.

EX MACHINA #29 (MR) 2.99

Ooh, I'm always glad to get a new issue of this one. More alternate universe hijinx, I expect. And politics, of course.

GARTH ENNIS CHRONICLES OF WORMWOOD #4 (OF 6) (MR) 3.99

I expect hilarity! And probably some nasty demonic business. It's been a fun series so far, now that it's half over, maybe we'll get to more of a plot. Or something.

HIGHWAYMEN #1 (OF 5) 2.99

I made fun of the cover of this issue when it first solicited, but it might be worth a look. It's some sort of action/spy/car series from Wildstorm.

IRON MAN HYPERVELOCITY #6 (OF 6) 2.99

We finally get an end to the series, as Tony 2.0 fights off some sort of SHIELD mecha bad guys. It's been an awesome series; Marvel should get Adam Warren to write stuff like this more often.

JOHN WOOS SEVEN BROTHERS TP (MR) 14.99

I got the first couple issues of this series due to Garth Ennis on writing. It was okay, but I gave up on it. I heard it got better at the end though, due especially to what I assume was the pimp character turning into a dragon and shouting, "I'm a motherfuckin' dragon, bitch!" I dunno, should I pick this up, or try to get the issues I missed, or not bother?

MARVEL ADVENTURES AVENGERS VOL 3 DIGEST TP 6.99

I might have some of the issues in this volume (although I think I gave them to my wife to take to her classroom), but I might end up getting it sometime. Jeff Parker!

NEW TALES OF OLD PALOMAR #2 7.95

Another series I'll catch up to someday. I need to find the second volumes of the collections and continue my Hernandez obsession. Man, those are some good comics.

PHONOGRAM VOL 1 RUE BRITANNA TP 14.99

I got the first issue of this series, and had a hell of a time following it. I read several reviews with similar comments, but most people seemed to enjoy the series even with the obscure musical references. Maybe I'll give this a try. It's certainly a good deal, since I think the six issues were $3.50 each. Of course, does this mean the trade doesn't include the endnotes? Because then the series might be really incomprehensible.

REBORN VOL 4 GN 7.99

I've been curious about this manga series detailing the exploits of a toddler assassin, but I've never read it. Yet another one to add to the mental "maybe someday" list.

REPO #1 (OF 5) 3.50

The new Rick Spears/Rob G. series, about futuristic repo men fighting clone armies, or something. I'm getting it solely due to my love of Pirates of Coney Island, which Spears also wrote. Maybe someday I'll also read Teenagers From Mars, another collaboration of theirs.

SPIDER-MAN FANTASTIC FOUR #3 (OF 4) 2.99

Speaking of Jeff Parker, here's another issue of his fun series with Mike Wieringo. Spidey and the FF fight aliens, and Dr. Doom gets involved somehow, judging by the cover. Go Parker!

SPIRIT #7 2.99

I believe this is the "guest creator" issue, with three short stories by people other than Darwyn Cooke. I'm sure I will dig it, if only due to Kyle Baker's contribution.

TALES FROM THE CRYPT #1 3.95

Hey, they brought back the old-school horror book! This has two 20-page stories, and the only creator I recognize is Rob Vollmar, who wrote the book Bluesman (which I haven't read). It might be worth checking out.

WEIRD WORLD OF JACK STAFF KING SIZE SPECIAL #1 5.99

I've never read Jack Staff, but I always hear that it's really good. Maybe I'll check out this special. Do I need to know anything going in?

WONDERLAND #4 3.50

I've been curious about this book, due to the art of Sonny Liew (by the way, review of Re-Gifters coming soon!), but I haven't felt like buying a Disney book. It sure looks pretty though.

X-MEN FIRST CLASS HC 24.99

Oh, sure, an expensive hardcover. I considered getting this (due to Jeff Parker), but I'm not spending this much. Maybe when the softcover comes out.

YAKITATE JAPAN VOL 6 TP 9.99

Another manga I've never read but might read someday because I've heard good things. It's about baking bread. Hey, why not?

YOTSUBA MANGA VOL 4 TP 9.99

And this is a manga that has been talked up for quite a while. It seemingly stopped coming out after the third volume, and now that it has resumed, there has been much rejoicing. I hear so much positive word-of-mouth, I think I'll have to get it sometime. If nothing else, it looks like one my wife will enjoy, and I'm always on the lookout for stuff to push on her.

Apollos Song TP

I only see this one on Midtown Comics' list, but it's definitely one I want to get. Osamu Tezuka doing "adult" material, I believe. $20, but I'm sure I can find it at a discount on Amazon, or use a Borders coupon.
-----

Whew! I think that's everything, but you never know when something might catch my eye at the store. Comics shopping is fun! Anyway, stay tuned later today, because more reviews are coming!

In the future, comics will be purchased

Marvel and DC's solicitations for March 2007 came out today, so here's what I'm interested in:

Marvel:

Newuniversal #4 - I enjoyed the first issue of this, so I'll be getting this unless the series takes a huge downturn. I was going to review that issue and mention the strange multiple inclusions in the story of the logo in the upper right of the covers, but I never did. I see that there is at least one more use of the symbol, on that guy's face on the lower right of this cover. Weird.

Powers #26 - I didn't review the most recent issue of Powers, but it was quite good. Bendis can write at least one good book at a time. I wish he would write more.

Punisher War Journal #5 - Man, Punisher's got some guns, doesn't he? I imagine that helps when lifting heavy artillery, but probably not during close quarters combat. I didn't get the first issue of this, but I might pick up subsequent issues. We'll see.

Runaways Saga - This is one of those "series recap" books that Marvel does from time to time. I guess it's for people who are joining the series with Joss Whedon. It's supposed to be told from the POV of Molly, and it's written by CB Cebulski. It'll probably be bad. Especially if the cover (by Humberto Ramos) is any indication. Yuck.

Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane #16 - Wow, it's hard to believe this series has lasted this long. It's cool, I really dig the series. This issue is the debut of the new artist, David Hahn. He has some sample art up, and it looks pretty good.

Amazing Spider-Man #540 - I won't actually be getting this, but I thought the cover was nice. It's by Ron Garney.

The Dark Tower #2 - I'm still undecided on this one, but damn, that is a creepy cover. Jae Lee is awesome.

Franklin Richards: March Madness! - I love these Franklin Richards books. The cover on this one is hilarious.

Iron Man: Hypervelocity #3 (of 6) - More of what promises to be a crazy series by Adam Warren. I hope it doesn't disappoint.

Immortal Iron Fist #4 - Man, I'm going to have to pick up the first issue of this. I was undecided, but it's received many online plaudits. It better not suck!

DC:

Wow, looks like I'm much more interested in DC than Marvel, although mostly Vertigo and Wildstorm.

Batman #664 - More Grant Morrison Batman. Should be enjoyable. That cover is okay, although I see Joe Kubert's name on there along with his son Andy. Did he ink the cover? Parts of it do look pretty nice, especially the cop that Batman's beating on.

Captain Marvel: The Monster Society of Evil #2 (of 4) - More of the Jeff Smith Captain Marvel book. I love the cover.

The Spirit #4 - I hope this series is good. The first issue comes out tomorrow, so we'll see.

Hawkgirl - I don't read this book, but this cover is hilarious. Giant Hawkgirl robot attack! The cover's by Howard Chaykin, and he even included the large, round breasts!

I don't read Aquaman either, but this is Tad Williams' first issue. He's a good fantasy novelist, and I enjoyed his recently-concluded The Next, so this might be something to watch out for.

Wildcats #2 - Looks like this is scheduled to come out, if it doesn't get delayed (which it probably will). God, I hate Jim Lee. I'll probably get it, if just for this line in the solicitation: "All goes according to plan except for one little hiccup: He kills them all [the team]- on live television!" That sounds interesting. Maybe that's the twist Morrison was leading up to in the first issue.

Sgt. Rock: The Prophecy TPB - This series got lots of acclaim this year. I'll think about getting it. I do like war stories, and Joe Kubert is an old hand at that sort of thing.

Y: The Last Man #55 - The series gets closer to finishing. An unconventional (for the series) cover on this one.

Testament #16 - This is one freaky cover. That thing doesn't look right. I assume it's the god/monster unleashed at the end of last issue. I forget his name. This series is weird, but good.

Crossing Midnight #5 - I kind of liked the first issue of this series. We'll see what happens with it. Once again, a nice cover by JH Williams III.

Welcome to Tranquility #4 - Good first issue of this series. Again, I'll see if it's worth continuing to pick up. Striking cover on this issue.

I get Fables in TPB form, but I always have to point out James Jean's beautiful covers. This month is no exception.

Jack of Fables #9 - I do get this monthly, so I'll point out that it's very enjoyable. Also featuring Jean on covers, with similar results.

This is the TPB of the recently-concluded American Splendor four-issue series. I bought the issues, and I recommend it. Very good.

Midnighter #5 - I dug the issue of this series that came out this week. It looks like it will stay good. Generic cover, but that's no big deal.

The Boys #9 - Similar cover to last month on this one. I'm enjoying this series as well (man, I must be getting tired; my comments are starting to sound redundant). It started to pick up in the last issue. Hopefully it'll get even better.

I probably won't be getting this Stardust hardcover. It's $39.99, which is pretty pricey. I have the paperback of the book, but I've heard the illustrated version is very nice. Bummer.

DMZ #17 - Another series I really like. That's all I have to say.

I don't read American Virgin, but I think this is a great cover. It's by Joshua Middleton. He should do some interior art sometime.

Army@Love #1 - Now here's one I'm excited about. I really like Rick Veitch, and this series sounds incredible. Some kind of sexually-charged political/military satire. Looks great!

Jack Kirby's Fourth World Omnibus volume 1 - And I saved the best for last! I've been waiting for DC to collect Kirby's Fourth World stuff, and this looks amazing. It's $50, but I'll probably look for it on Amazon for a discount. I'm very excited about this. It contains Kirby's Jimmy Olsen stuff, and the first three issues of Mister Miracle, New Gods, and Forever People. Awesome.
------
And that's all. We'll see when Image's solicits come out. I didn't see Ex Machina or All-Star Superman. Hope those don't get delayed.
